It's high time I introduced the new addition.
This is Phantom. I fell in love with him at the shelter where I volunteer. He was dropped off in the middle of the night, so his past is a mystery. But since his ear is clipped, I would guess he has spent some time on the streets. At the shelter he would always be burrowed under his bed, invisible to anyone coming to adopt a cat. But if you pulled him out of his hidey-hole, he was a champion snuggler.
Because he was always hiding, I worried that he would never get adopted. I shouldn't have worried...
We had a bit of a rocky start after I adopted Phantom. He got out of the house and disappeared after four days with me. I postered the neighborhood and got a call from a neighbor, saying she had seen Phantom in her shed. I went down there and eventually tempted him out with some tuna. He gobbled the tuna and approached me, meowing, but it took me several days of feeding him before he would get close enough for me to round him up again.
Now Phantom is doing very well, coming out of his shell and being extremely playful. He's still skittish and will take off running at the drop of a hat, but the burrowing behavior has completely disappeared. My 15 year-old Quentin is even coming around-- she often forgets to hiss at him now. I have caught them touching noses, and just tonight I caught them both on the bed.
Oh, and Phantom is his name only in the technical sense. Despite the fact that he pulled a disappearing act, it just doesn't seem to fit him. I am still trying to find the perfect name for him. Suggestions welcome!
